The Tehachapi Loop is a 3/4 mile long spiral in which a main railroad (Tehachapi Pass) passes over itself.  The grade angle is too steep for a straight track -- the combination tunnel and loop lessens the grade.  The project was one of the greatest engineering accomplishments during the 1800's.  A train longer than 4000 feet will pass over itself!
