Corinth Canal
bmeyer2 (07/29/2008) The Corinth Canal was built between 1881 and 1893 to connect the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf, separating the Peloponnesian peninsula from mainland Greece. Although the canal is only 6.3km long, it was a great achievement, saving ships from a 400km trip around. However, since it's only 21m wide, most commercial ships don't fit. Also interesting are the submersible bridges at each end, allowing boats to pass. See Wikipedia for more info: |
